Okay so when I was flying over Busan and I got my first glipses of the city I thought, wow, big and then my second thought was that the city had been planned my someone whp had just started playing SimCity. Clearly no divisions in sections, just throwing random amounts of stuff all over the place. There are sky scrapers and then a big gap of slumish areas and then sky scrapers again.
After I landed at the airport, just outside the city propper I was taken to a motel with Matt (the other mad fellow who decided it would be a good idea to work in Korea). The place isn't too bad really, the room is quite nice and the amenaties are quite good, but the floor heating in my room doesn't seem to have an off function or even a way to turn it down, so it's fans and open windows for me.
As you may expect everything is in Korean with the odd smattering of English. For the most part I have no fucking clue what I'm doing or what is happening, so I'm just letting it all wash over me best I can. I am saying hello and thankyou a lot in Korean, very useful words to have. But all the while I am getting lots of strange looks from the locals, I think I may well be in a part of Busan that rarely has foreigners...oh well.
I have discovered that the roads are fucking dangerous. There appear to basically be no rules on many of the roads and when you come across some form of organisation, it is just there to fool you. I have seen cars take a short cut across the pavement many times and there was a guy on a motorbike just casually riding down the pavement to the oncoming pedestrians.
Me and Matt went to a homebase/tesco today, just to kill some time and we came across some fucking weird stuff, much of which I do not have photos of because I am badly prepared and knackered. There was this fruit that looked like a massive apple and was really heavy...apparently ir's some form of pear...
Oh, I did buy one or two things though. Got some beer for fairly cheap and this stuff is imported too, not bad - Heineken. Much cheaper than home. I got myself some crisps, nothging special and a chocolate bar called crunky, I'm sure it's not the most comical by any means, but it was enough to make me laugh, not tried it yet though.
I went to a steakhouse about an hour ago. Pretty good, sort of a Australian/American/Korean mix. Not much to say about that, other than it was just a bit of comfort eating, being that it was very close to something you can get at home.
I am looking forward to getting my own place so I can customise it to my own liking and have a safe haven at the end of the day. By the same token I am looking forward to getting into my new job, but nervous as hell at the same time. I'm sure there'll be a steep learning curve, but that cannot be helped.
Well, I am certaing that I will have much more to share on the morrow, but I am pretty damn beat now, so I'm gonna get some sleep and start anew tomorrow. Night.
